Pickens plan spares thousands of wild horses
Thousands of wild horses and burros roaming public lands have found a surprise benefactor: Madeleine Pickens, wife of billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens.
Mrs. Pickens stunned a Monday public hearing in Reno, Nev., where she announced her plan to adopt more than 30,000 horses and burros in federal holding pens. The animals were facing death because the government couldn't afford to keep them and cattlemen opposed releasing them on Western rangelands, where grazing is growing scarce.
