Rodeo dust and lightning — how could you beat that?

John Taylor, editor

I don’t know about anybody else, but I think I’m still blowing rodeo and fairgrounds dust out of sinus passages I didn’t even know I had until this summer.

It’s worth it, though — what a great year. And what a great bunch of events. From Omak to Moses Lake, Cashmere, Lake Chelan, Okanogan, Chesaw, Ellensburg and the Methow, we sure had some fun. (See our October/November print edition for a few last looks at all the doings.)

FFA and 4-H equestrians, along with rodeoers from all over, busted their chops — and probably a few other things — staging all-in performances for the rest of us to enjoy.

Despite triple-digit temperatures at the Grant County Fairgrounds in August, the 35-40 mph winds that cut across the Ellensburg Rodeo and Kittitas County Fair over the Labor Day weekend, and July thunderstorms at the annual Omak Stampede and World Famous Suicide Race, everybody got their money’s worth.

Don’t figure that’s the end of the ride, though.

The fall brings opportunities for spectacular backcountry treks, and the high school equestrian season is just around the bend.

As anybody who’s got horses knows, you can’t just put a tarp over them, park them in the garage and forget about them until spring.

Don’t look for any let-up from us, either.

We’re already working on seasonal stories, advice columns and photos to keep us all going through the winter, and we’re always looking for ways to make North Country Rider more interesting and useful to you.

We’ve been spending a lot of time lately on this site to help keep our coverage as current as possible, and we’re still working to make sure your voices, photos, ideas — or in Sandra Walters’ case, doodles — come through loud and clear. Sandra, a Methow Valley horsewoman and cartoonist, has committed to sketching us a panel for each issue from now on. (Her first one’s on Page 31 of the latest issue, by the way.)

And we’re all working to make sure North Country Rider generates enough revenue to keep these issues coming, so if you like what you’ve been seeing here, you might put in a good word for us with businesses who’d be interested in advertising with us.

So that’s about it from here. I’m gonna go blow my nose again, then head outside and take in some of that fall weather. You owe it to yourself to do the same.
