Fair time in Waterville

The NCW District Fair in Waterville drew a crush of horses and riders this year — managers at the Open Class barn and the 4-H/FFA barn said stalls were full for the first time in several seasons. Thirty-one horses set up in the 4-H/FFA barn, while 17 were in the Open Class barn. The four-day fair closed Aug. 24.

Barn crew

As horses checked in to their stalls in the 4-H and FFA barn Wednesday, Chelan Caballeros 4-H members (from left) Selah Valencia, 13, Mikaila Harrison, 10, Katie Gleasman, 9, and Lexie Gleasman, 7, pitched in.

Blue-ribbon style

Jeans and T-shirts are fine for most participants at Waterville’s NCW Fair, but some folks — like BB Banker here — favor flair. The 14-year-old quarter horse is being ridden by Zoee Stamps, 10, of the Chelan Caballeros 4-H Club. The NCW Fair continued through Sunday at the fairgrounds in Waterville.

Digging in

Eye-catching

At the NCW District Fair in August, members of Cashmere’s Open Pastures 4-H Club added some personal touches to their horses’ fly masks: painted-on eyes that represent each horse’s personality. Kamille Cummings, 15, explains that Gunner's "eyes" (which include science-lab glasses) reflect his tendency to be laid-back ... but smart. See story at right for this year's fair results.
